Rocky Mountain Energy Needs
The planned Totem Natural Gas Storage Project will make additional natural gas available to CIG’s customers in the Rocky Mountain market and increase the amount of gas available for the company to provide to other customers via our existing pipeline systems. This is especially important to CIG’s Rocky Mountain customers when taking into account the unpredictability of weather in the Rocky Mountain region. Temperature swings of 50 to 60 degrees within just a few hours are not unusual, and because of this, meeting the energy needs throughout the Rockies can be challenging. Thanks to its location, the Totem Natural Gas Storage Project will be ideally situated to help satisfy the demand for energy along the Front Range area of Colorado.
With a working inventory of approximately 7.0 billion cubic feet and a maximum withdrawal rate of 200 million cubic feet per day, the Totem Natural Gas Storage Project will enhance energy security for Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region by providing a readily available supply of natural gas to help heat and cool schools, hospitals, businesses, and homes in many Rocky Mountain region communities. Additionally, the project can serve to mitigate supply and price volatility during times of peak demand by allowing CIG’s customers to purchase and store natural gas when prices are lower and have it available at times when the prices would normally be higher.
El Paso Corporation and CIG are committed to Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region and are continually assessing ways to best serve our customers and the marketplace. Natural gas storage is one way to provide energy when needed to meet growing demand, and our commitment includes making significant capital expenditures for natural gas storage across our operating area.
