Project Facilities
SNG plans to solution mine a cavern in the New Home dome salt using fresh water to create a cavern within the salt deposit to ultimately form the ‘container’ to hold the natural gas. The cavern will be from a depth of approximately 3,500’ below the surface to 5,000’ below the surface and approximately 250’ in diameter.
The project site will contain water and brine pumping equipment for the solution mining of the cavern. Water supply and brine reinjection wells will be located nearby. The cavern well will have a wellhead with emergency shut down valves and individual well measurement to allow for accurate cavern inventory data. The cavern will be connected to the plant facility by a gas, water, and brine gathering system.
An approximately 9-mile long steel pipeline will be required to connect the New Home Natural Gas Storage facility to SNG’s interstate natural gas transmission network to allow the gas to serve the natural gas markets in the Southeast. The site will contain gas compressors housed in a building to pump the natural gas into the cavern during periods of low demand. Gas dehydration equipment will be installed to remove any water from the gas on the withdrawal from the cavern. The facility will also contain offices, maintenance facilities, and a control room for the operation of the storage facility. The entire facility will be secured.
