El Paso Corporation provides natural gas and related energy products in a safe, efficient, and dependable manner. We own North America’s largest interstate natural gas pipeline system and one of North America’s largest independent natural gas producers, as well as an emerging midstream business.
Our vision as a company and as a workforce is to be the Place to Work, the Neighbor to Have, and the Company to Own. That vision provides a framework for this report as we continue to build a legacy of sustainability across our operations.
We are pleased to report continued progress on our sustainability-focused activities since we published our first Corporate Sustainability Report (CSR) in 2007, with subsequent 2008 and 2009 reports published annually. Our 2010 CSR offers further insight into our efforts to meet stakeholders’ expectations on our corporate citizenship and the long-term sustainability of the company’s operations. More than a comprehensive report that tells our sustainability story, this report provides a platform for us to engage in a conversation with our neighbors, investors, customers, employees, and other stakeholders on issues that are important to all of us — the company’s social, environmental, and economic impact. These stakeholders were determined and prioritized through ongoing, year-long dialogue and issue assessment with El Paso’s executive management team, including our executive vice president and general counsel.
We established our new Midstream business in 2009 and, in May 2011, we announced that our Board of Directors granted initial approval of a plan to separate El Paso Corporation into two publicly traded companies by year-end 2011. Our Exploration & Production (E&P) Company will be spun off from El Paso, and El Paso Corporation will include our Pipeline Group, Midstream Group, and interest in El Paso Pipeline Partners. However, there were no changes in the structure of our business that would warrant significant changes in the presentation of the information in our 2009 Corporate Sustainability Report. We prepared the report to conform to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 guidelines at the self-declared Application Level C. We continue to make it available in three formats, including a printed publication, a Web site in the Sustainability section of www.elpaso.com, and a downloadable file from our site.
Scope
Our report includes key sustainability measures for assets operated by El Paso and its subsidiaries. When it is helpful to provide more detail, information may be discussed for our business units, which include our Pipeline Group, E&P Company, Midstream Group, and the Shared Services organization. Reporting boundaries for greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) were defined using the management control approach, which means that 100 percent of the emissions from operations, facilities, and other sources under operational control of El Paso in the United States are reported. For all other measures, our impact is reported for El Paso as a whole. Our reporting covers topics and related content that was determined and prioritized through ongoing, year-long dialogue and issue assessment with El Paso’s executive management team, including our executive vice president and general counsel. We utilize our CSR to communicate the key areas of our performance that are of interest to stakeholders.
The information we have included in this report is drawn from established systems within the company for performance tracking and reporting. A multi-functional workgroup consisting of members across our businesses and Shared Services provided key data for this report and reviewed its content. Included were representatives from Environmental, Health & Safety; Operations; Human Resources; Legal; Investor and Media Relations; and others.
Although our report, in its entirety, has not been evaluated by an independent third party for external assurance, data regarding the company’s financial performance and portions of the environmental data we present have been verified by an external third party, as noted.
